[Game Criticism]: Fun in Port Malaya? Philippine Representation in Ragnarok Online’s Port Malaya
Hi everybody! I’m super excited to share my first foray into game criticism with you.
Originally titled “Is It More Fun in Port Malaya?”, this essay started as a final exercise for my Art Criticism class last year. Now, I’m honored to be part of the game history zine “Memory Insufficient,” edited by Zoya Street and co-edited Krish Raghav.
In this essay, I talk about problematic aspects of the Philippine-inspired RO Map and why it’s important to take them into account. We’ll be examining the use of Philippine mythological creatures, religion, race, visual motifs, and even pop culture references like the Jejemon.
If you liked this essay, please share it with your friends, and let me know what you think!
This links to my Patreon creation page, and if you’d like to help me make more essays like this, supporting me as a patron is one of the best ways to do it!
I also accept tips via Paypal and Gumroad.
Thank you!

Icon Day 04 is done! We reached the tip incentive that unlocked inked icons for all. In total, I drew 18 black and white icons and one commissioned two-character color icon.
Thank you so much to everyone who supported me, and continue to support me on this project!
My next Icon Day is scheduled on October 15, 2014. Mark your calendars!
If you like my work, please consider supporting me via Patreon. It helps me buy new art supplies and upgrade my current equipment. Thank you!

Tumblr Segretation: New Side Blogs!

Hi folks! You may have noticed this tumblr’s username change. That’s because it’s bugged me a lot that my art blog has been not very purely art these days. So I fixed things up a bit.

melgcabral.tumblr.com is now my main updates/social media interaction/promotions/signal boosts/sometimes personal tumblr.

artbymelgcabral.tumblr.com (this one!) is now my purely art and sketch blog where I post works in progress, doodles, and finished work. Like I originally intended.

craftsbymel.tumblr.com is now my crafts blog! Jewelry, clay, paper beads, random experiments, the works.

I don’t know yet if this set-up will stay or for how long, but for now let’s see how this works out. I hope it sets my very particularly organized soul at rest.

IN GENERAL, though, your best way to keep updated with what I’m working on is still my Official Site & Blog at melgcabral.comI like to make round-up posts of what I’ve been up to, and I usually announce new projects there.

Or you can follow me at Twitter for MOSTLY LIVE random sneak peeks and updates, but it serves as a pseudo therapy-journal and occasional soapbox as well.

That’s it!

It’s boggling my mind how much more detailed my icons got as a result of doing Doodle a Day for at leeeeast six months straight. The first Icon Day was drawn around January-March 2013 (I started daily doodles on New Years), while the second one was drawn roughly around June-July 2013 (the ones in the top row, and the first three on the bottom row are mine.) Improvement!?
… more reasons to be excited/more determined to start doodling everyday again!

It seems I forgot to announce this here, so better late than never. I now have an Official Site and Blog!
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ melgcabral.com \(◕ヮ◕\)*:・゚✧
It’s where I’ll compile links to all my projects, and will be my portfolio. While this tumblr will still be my art and sketch blog, this will be my Career Blog of sorts where I’ll post about any upcoming projects and events I might participate in, maybe some sneak peeks, and I may post art round-ups of the week or month from time to time.
Please consider adding my site to your favorites or feeds. Thank you! <3

Dropping in to say I’m still alive and having a blast teaching my art students this summer! Batch 2 is nearing its end and while I may get tired after a hard day’s work, I’m incredibly happy about what I do.
To relax after teaching and finally finishing a friend’s commission, I cut, rolled, glued, varnished, and assembled my first officially complete paper bead bracelet in the colors of Young Artists’ Studio. I plan to make more for my co-teachers too. :D
I say it’s my first assembled bracelet because I still have a bunch of beads I made last year that I have yet to varnish and put together into accessories of their own. I’ve finally settled on a varnish to use and so expect more paper bead jewelry soon!
(Also featuring my snazzy nail polish and new comfy pajamas! The simple pleasures of life~)

Day 083
Watching the Lupin III movie by Studio Ghibli that Miyazaki helped out in and saw a bunch of fan-art yesterday, so I wanted to try making a quickie too!

Did you know the local Philippine dub pronounced it Loo-pin and not Lu-pan? Watching the Japanese dub is taking me time to get used to. Ahhh, childhood.
